Top 10 facts about Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin has made and broken so many records that it is a talent in itself to be able to condense it into such a small article.
Sachin Tendulkar is one of the most gifted Indian cricketers to have played the game. When breaking records and making new ones was a dream come true for batsmen, it was something that the little master got habituated to.
Most number of centuries, the 50s, MOM awards, etc the list goes on.
If you can find one list of cricket records without this guy’s name, then
you are not searching properly. You wouldn’t be surprised that the above-mentioned records apply to both tests and ODIs. Now, let us take a look at some facts about this man:

  1. Civilian honors

Sachin has received three of the four highest civilian awards given by govt. of India. Bharat Ratna in 2014, Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and Padma Shri in 1999 for the contributions made in cricket.

  1. Coin collection in the nets

During his early days, Sachin used to have a deal with his head coach Ramakant that he would get a coin if he could bat for the entire session without getting out. Ramakant ended up giving 13 coins to Sachin.

  1. This will never happen again, Hoggy

In the third match of the India Vs Australia ODI series, 2007 Australian bowler Brad Hogg dismissed Sachin. After the match, Hogg asked Sachin to sign a photograph of the dismissal. Sachin wrote these words- “This will never happen again, Hoggy”, and signed the photograph. Hogg had never dismissed Sachin after that.

  1. Debut match for Pakistan

Sachin made his cricket debut for India in 1989. But it was two years before that the little master had made his cricket debut when he played for Pakistan as a substitute fielder.

  1. Superstitious Sachin

Sachin also has some practices which put him on the list of the superstitious cricketers. There are some unusual things he did, for ex. putting on the left pad before the right one, which he believes to bring him luck. Another incident is, handing over Anil Kumble’s sweater and cap to the umpire before every over. Interestingly, Kumble took 10 wickets in that innings.

Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar is a right-hand batsman and bowler. Apparently, he is a left-hander.

Everyone knows about the 37 ball century by Shahid Afridi which remained the fastest century in ODIs till it was bettered by Corey Anderson. But, very few know that Afridi used Sachin’s bat in that record innings.

  1. Philanthropy

Sachin sponsors 200 underprivileged children every year through a Mumbai based NGO – Apnalaya. He also helped raise RS. 70 million for providing basic facilities to the students in the government schools.

It won’t come as a surprise that Sachin’s profile is the most visited page in Cricinfo. On the day he took 200 runs against SA, the little master not only broke the record of the highest individual ODI score but also few of the Cricinfo servers. Some of the ESPN Cricinfo servers crashed that day due to a large number of visitors.
